How do you feel about yourself?

Do you frequently focus on your faults? Would you like to improve your self-esteem, or find out how to foster healthy feelings of self-worth in children? This one day workshop will review research on the origins of self-concept, and outline evidence based skills and strategies to create and maintain healthy self-esteem for all ages.

Course outline

This course will cover the following topics:

Psychological research behind the development of self-concept, including common ways in which self-esteem and self-confidence are eroded, and the problems that arise from this

Introducing the Inner Critic: Explores how low self-esteem is maintained by negative self-talk and biased expectations

Adjusting your thinking: How to challenge unhelpful thinking patterns and move toward a healthier acceptance of self, building your own self esteem

Next Steps: how to manage setbacks and challenges, and presentation of a model of healthy self-esteem including tools to build self-esteem in others.

Learning outcomes

On completion of the course learners will be able to:

  • Describe the research pertaining to the development of self-concept
  • demonstrate an understanding of how self-concept and self-esteem can be damaged and the problems arising from this
  • recognise and challenge unhelpful thinking patterns, self-talk, self-beliefs and biased expectations
  • analyse their own personal qualities using a self-assessment tool
  • integrate psychological theory, knowledge of unhelpful cognitions, and self-assessment to develop personal strategies to move toward healthier self-esteem.
